1/72 Sherman Firefly Vc Dragon - Workbench

Another Sherman on the workbench, but it's a braille scale this time. Quick built OOB (out of the box), without any modifications. I wanted to try slightly different approach with the paint job.
There were no surprises during the build, so could move on quickly to painting stage. First, grey primer Mr. Hobby Surfacer 1200, then black pre-shading.
It's rather standard approach here, but it should help to bring up all the shadows and highlights.

First went standard Olive Drab (XF-62), followed by by highlights.

I made highlights by mixing Olive Drab with Khaki (XF-49), to bright up normally boring and dull Olive Drab.

In next stage I'll be painting all the details, so STAY TUNED :)

  1. Looking good! Can't wait to see it at the next meeting. What pressure are you spraying with and what airbrush?

    1. Thanks Scott :)
Base color I usually go fast, 30 PSI on compressor, cut down a bit on airbrush.
For the highlights and small details, I set compressor on 20 PSI, but again I tend to cut it down on airbrush.
Firefly is painted with Iwata Eclipse HP-BS.
      Stay tuned :)

    2. Sounds good. I was courageous because you are able to not lose your preshading after all the coats and I thought you tend to use higher pressure. You do not thin your paints to much on a fresh bottle correct? I know after time you might need more thinning due to evaporation. These are great. I love the step by step photos.

    3. Well, I thin paint a bit, and I go 2 or 3 passes with the base color. The trick is, for Tamiya paints I use Mr. Hobby thinner, which results in even and smooth finish.

I'm glad you like it. Firefly will be bearing markings of 1st Polish Armored Division, Spring 1944, England.
      Cheers :)

  4. Marcin, I am still amazed at the finish you get in Braille scale
The shading really pops once the color goes on.
I gather from the previous comments - that you spray very thin coats but plenty of them to build up the final color.

  5. I'm glad you like it :) I do so :)
Yes, you're correct, I spray thin coats. For base Olive Drab I did maybe 3 or 4 passes. For highlights 2-3 passes depending on the spot.
Now I have to focus on details.
